Engine — 1.8t Oil Sludge 1997–2001 (1.8T only)

Oil coking and sludge formation in the 1.8T, concentrated at the turbocharger oil feed and in the sump, leading to oil starvation and turbo or bearing failure. Driven by small sump capacity, high turbo heat soak and long service intervals. Audi extended engine coverage on 1.8T-engined cars of this era in response.

Ignition — Coil Packs 1997–2001

Coil pack failures on the 1.8T producing misfires and limp mode; the subject of large-scale replacement campaigns across VW/Audi 1.8T applications.

Suspension — Control Arm Bushings 1996–2001

Wear of the multi-link front control arm ('thrust arm') bushings, producing clunking, wandering and uneven tire wear; a defining B5 maintenance failure.
