Documented problems

Engine 1998–2002

1ZZ-FE excessive oil consumption. The early 1ZZ-FE piston has a low-tension oil ring with too few and too small oil-return holes in the ring land; the holes coke over, the ring stops scraping, and the engine burns oil, sometimes a quart per 1,000 miles or worse. Toyota revised the piston design later in the engine's life.

Engine

Oil gelling/sludge complaints on some 1ZZ-FE units when extended drain intervals were used; Toyota ran a customer support program covering sludge-related engine damage on several 1990s-2000s engine families.
