Engine Oil Sludge (1MZ-Fe) 1999–2002
The 1MZ-FE V6 is central to Toyota's oil-gelling episode: sludge accumulates in the crankcase and under the valve covers, starving oil passages and in bad cases destroying the engine. Toyota handled it through a special policy adjustment giving up to eight years of coverage rather than a recall, and a later class settlement covered roughly 3.5 million 1997-2002 Toyota/Lexus vehicles including the RX 300.
