Torque converter output shaft splines strip, causing sudden and complete loss of motive power with no warning while driving. NHTSA ODI logged 227 owner complaints of sudden power loss, 124 attributed to spline stripping; Ford recalled roughly 205,896 MY2004-2005 Freestar and Mercury Monterey vans in 2012 (Ford campaign 11S25, NHTSA 12V-006) and replaced the torque converter.
